Advances Level 1 Unit 1 (Studio Safety, Tools, Design Process, and Community); safe independent machine use, cleanup routines, basic stitch control, and a documented design cycle are assumed mastered.
Unit Description
This unit moves students from confident makers to studio technicians and designers. You take the safety, tool care, and design-cycle habits from Level 1 and raise them to professional standards. You learn the advanced and industrial equipment that shapes real garment production — the serger/overlock, cover-stitch, blind hemmer, an intro to the industrial straight-stitch, and the couture pressing tools that separate a homemade finish from a tailored one. You also learn how professionals actually start a project: writing a design brief, building research and mood boards with a colour and fabric story, planning a critical path, and translating ideas into a tech pack the way a factory or design house would. Finally you step up as a studio leader — assessing risk, troubleshooting machines, mentoring peers, and defending your design choices in critique. Everything you brief and sketch here feeds directly into the garment you make later in Level 2, so this unit is the planning engine for the whole course.
Historic Notes
The split between the person who designs and the people who sew is relatively recent. Until the 19th century a tailor or dressmaker did everything: measuring, drafting, cutting, fitting, and stitching. Industrialisation changed that. The overlock/serger was patented in the 1880s (Merrow) to finish seam edges fast, and by the early 20th century garment factories used progressive bundle systems where one operator did one operation. Paris couture houses pushed the opposite direction — slow, hand-finished, made-to-measure work — and developed the pressing and shaping tools (hams, clappers, point pressers) still used today. The modern tech pack grew out of mid-20th-century mass production and global sourcing: when a design is sketched in one country and sewn in another, every measurement, material, and seam has to be written down so nothing is lost in translation. Understanding both traditions — the factory's precision and the couture house's craft — is what advanced studio practice is about.
Contemporary Uses
Today the design brief, mood board, colour/fabric story, and tech pack are standard documents in apparel brands, costume shops, outdoor-gear companies, and independent labels. A designer rarely sews the production garment themselves; instead they communicate intent through accurate flats, specs, and a bill of materials so a sample room or factory can make it. Sergers and cover-stitch machines finish nearly all knitwear and activewear you own (look at the inside of a T-shirt hem). Blind hemmers finish tailored trousers and curtains invisibly. Couture pressing tools remain essential anywhere shaping matters — bridal, suiting, theatre, and high-end alterations. Critical-path planning is project management borrowed straight from manufacturing and events. Even small Chilliwack-based makers selling at markets or online use these same tools to cost, communicate, and repeat their work.

Key Notes
Advanced and Industrial Equipment
- Serger/overlock: trims and overcasts a seam edge in one pass. Standard machines use 3 or 4 threads, 2 needles, and 2 loopers. Threading order matters — lower looper, upper looper, then needles (follow your machine's colour-coded path). Rethread by tying onto existing threads or thread from scratch if it breaks. Differential feed controls the ratio of the two feed dogs: set it above 1.0 to ease/gather and stop stretchy knits from waving, and below 1.0 to stretch and prevent puckering on lightweight wovens. Never reach past the moving knife; raise or disengage it when you only want to overcast.
- Cover-stitch: makes the twin-needle hem you see on T-shirts and activewear — two or three rows of straight stitch on top, a looped overcast underneath, that stretches without popping. Use it for knit hems and bands. It does not trim.
- Blind hemmer: uses a special foot and a zigzag that catches only a thread or two of the garment face, producing an invisible hem on trousers, skirts, and tailored hems. Fold and feed exactly as shown or the stitch will show.
- Industrial straight-stitch (intro): one job, done fast and precisely — a single straight lockstitch at high speed, with a clutch or servo motor. Treat the pedal with respect; it is far quicker than a domestic machine. Great for long, straight, accurate seams in firm fabric.
- Match the machine to the task: domestic for versatility and construction, serger for edges and knits, cover-stitch for stretch hems, blind hemmer for invisible hems, industrial for speed and straight precision.
Couture and Advanced Pressing
Pressing is shaping, not just flattening. "Press as you go" — set every seam before crossing it with another.
- Tailor's ham: a firm curved cushion for pressing curved seams (darts, princess seams, sleeve caps, collars) so they keep their three-dimensional shape.
- Clapper: a smooth hardwood block. Steam a seam, then press the clapper down to drive moisture out and flatten edges crisply without scorching — used for sharp creases, hems, and lapels.
- Point presser / tailor's board: narrow wooden points for pressing open seams in collars, cuffs, and corners you cannot reach with a flat board.
- Sleeve board: a small double-ended board for pressing sleeves and narrow seams without creasing the rest of the tube.
- Always test heat and steam on a scrap, use a press cloth to prevent shine, and lift-and-lower rather than dragging the iron.
The Design Brief and Research
A design brief is a short written agreement about what you will make and why. It states: the user/wearer, the need or occasion, the function, key criteria (what success looks like), and constraints (budget, materials, time, skills, ethics). Research follows: gather references, build a mood board (images, textures, silhouettes that capture the feeling), and define a colour story (a tight palette of 3-6 colours) and a fabric story (the materials and their roles — main, lining, contrast, trim). These keep a project focused and make critique objective.
Critical-Path Planning and Time Management
A critical path lists every task in order, with which tasks must finish before others can start, and a deadline for each. Identify the longest dependent chain — that chain controls your finish date. In a low-cost studio, sourcing (thrifting, washing, prepping fabric) is often on the critical path, so start it first. Build in buffer time for fittings and re-dos.
The Tech Pack
A tech pack is the document a maker or factory uses to build a garment exactly as intended. A starter tech pack includes:
- Technical flats: clean, proportional, straight-on line drawings of the front and back, showing seams, stitching, closures, and details (no body, no shading).
- Bill of materials (BOM): every component — fabric, thread, interfacing, zipper, buttons, labels — with quantity, size/colour, and source.
- Spec / measurement sheet: the points of measure (POM) and target measurements (e.g., chest, length, hem width) plus tolerance.
- Construction notes: seam types, allowances, finishes, and order of operations.
Industry uses tech packs because they make a design repeatable, costable, and communicable to people who never spoke to the designer.
Studio Leadership, Risk, and Maintenance
- Risk assessment: before a task, name the hazard, who could be harmed, and the control (e.g., serger knife → keep fingers clear, disengage when overcasting only).
- Maintenance and troubleshooting: clean lint from feed dogs and loopers, change dull/bent needles, check threading first when stitches skip or thread shreds, match needle and thread to fabric, and rebalance serger tensions methodically (one thread at a time).
- Mentoring: show, don't take over; let a peer keep their hands on the machine; model safe habits and respectful language.
Professional Critique and Design Rationale
Defend choices against the brief, not against opinion. Be ready to explain why a colour, fabric, finish, or construction method serves the stated user, criteria, and constraints. Use "I chose X because the brief requires Y." Receive feedback by listening, asking clarifying questions, and noting revisions — not by defending ego.
Indigenous Respect
Chilliwack is in Stó:lō territory. As your design independence grows, so does your responsibility. Draw inspiration ethically: never reproduce protected, sacred, ceremonial, or Nation-specific designs, motifs, or regalia. When a brief touches Indigenous themes, work with community and knowledge keepers rather than borrowing, credit and compensate guests, and be able to state your own positionality and sources in your rationale.
Hands-On Assignment: Design Brief, Tech-Pack Starter, and Advanced-Finish Sampler
Task
Three connected pieces that set up a garment you will actually make later in Level 2.
- Professional design brief for a future Level 2 garment (e.g., your tailored bottom or structured top). One page covering: user/wearer, need/occasion, function, criteria, constraints (including budget and ethical sourcing), plus a small mood board and a defined colour story and fabric story.
- Tech-pack starter for that same garment: technical flats of the front and back (drawn by hand or digitally), a spec/measurement sheet with at least five points of measure, a bill of materials, and short construction notes.
- Advanced-finish sampler on scrap/donated fabric demonstrating, each labelled: a 3- or 4-thread serged/overlocked edge, a differential-feed adjustment on a knit or fine woven (with the setting noted), a cover-stitch OR blind-hem sample, and one couture pressing demonstration (e.g., a dart pressed over a ham or a seam set with a clapper) shown by a pressed seam mounted on the sampler.
Cost
Very low. Use scrap, donated, and remnant fabric and shared class thread for the sampler. Brief, mood board, and tech pack can be done on recycled paper or digitally at no cost; mood-board images can be sketched, printed from free sources, or cut from donated magazines.
