Three weeks: roughly one week for collars and interfacing samples plus a fit check, one week for the set-in sleeve, cuff/placket, and front closure, and one week to assemble, finish inside, and quality-control a complete structured top or light outerwear piece.

This unit advances Level 1 Unit 6 (../06_Garment_Construction_Tops.md), which is assumed mastered. In Level 1 you built a clean upper-body garment: stay-stitched necklines, shoulder and side seams, a facing or bias finish, and a set-in or dropped sleeve. Here we add the engineered details that separate a "top" from a "shirt or jacket": a collar with a stand, a button placket that lies flat, a set-in sleeve eased smoothly with no tucks, a cuff with a real placket, and an inside finished to a standard a customer would pay for. You should already be able to plan a cutting layout, sew accurate seam allowances, press over a ham, and document fit changes.
Unit Description
Students construct one structured upper-body garment to a professional standard: either a button-up shirt (two-piece collar with stand, button placket, set-in sleeves with cuffs and plackets) or a light lined jacket / overshirt (collar with facing, set-in sleeves, facing or simple lining). The unit treats the upper body as an engineering problem: flat pattern pieces must wrap a three-dimensional torso, hinge at the neck, rotate at the shoulder, and close down the front without gaping. The work is interfacing for structure, easing curved seams, enclosing raw edges, and finishing the inside as carefully as the outside. Garments are cut from thrifted shirting, sheets, or remnants; interfacing, buttons, and thread come from a shared class kit.
Historic Notes
The button-front shirt is one of the most engineered everyday garments. The collar stand — the band that lifts the collar off the neck and makes it sit up — is the detail that turned a flat-collared smock into a tailored shirt, and the two-piece construction (separate stand and collar) is still the marker of a quality shirt. Sleeve setting has its own history: dropped and gusseted sleeves of earlier centuries gave way to the shaped, eased set-in sleeve once curved patternmaking and the sewing machine made smooth sleeve caps possible. Tailoring traditions added interfacing and canvas to hold shape at collars, fronts, and cuffs, so a garment kept its line through wear. These are global techniques; the European tailored shirt and jacket are one tradition among many garment-engineering systems worldwide.
Contemporary Uses
Structured tops are everywhere in industry: the oxford shirt, the chore coat, the overshirt ("shacket"), the unlined blazer, the utility jacket. Manufacturers obsess over collar roll, sleeve-cap ease, placket symmetry, and inside finish because these are what buyers inspect and what customers feel when they wear a garment. Learning to set a sleeve without tucks and build a collar that rolls correctly is directly transferable to apparel production, alterations, costume work, and slow-fashion making. Because structured pieces are durable and repairable, they are also a strong answer to fast fashion: a well-made overshirt outlasts a dozen cheap tees.

Interfacing For Structure
Interfacing is what makes a collar a collar instead of a limp flap. Match it to the fabric: light fusible for shirting, a firmer fusible or sew-in for jacket-weight or loosely woven thrifted cloth. Always test a fusible on a scrap first — wrong heat or steam can bubble it permanently. Interface the upper collar and the stand, the cuffs, the placket/band, and the front facings. Press, do not iron-drag, fusibles: lift and lower with steam and let the piece cool flat before moving it so the bond sets. From the shared kit, cut interfacing economically; you only need it where structure is required, not on every piece.
Collars: Three Builds
- Convertible collar (flat / camp collar): a single collar with no separate stand, sewn into the neckline and worn open. Easiest; good for an overshirt. Interface one layer (the upper collar). Grade and clip the curve so the collar rolls toward the under side.
- Two-piece shirt collar with stand: the classic dress-shirt build. Make the collar (interface upper, sew, trim, turn, press, topstitch). Make the stand (interface, sandwich the finished collar between the two stand layers). Attach the stand to the neckline, finishing the inside stand edge by hand or by stitch-in-the-ditch. The stand must match the neckline length exactly or the front edges won't align — measure and notch carefully.
- Collar with facing: common on jackets. The collar is set into the neckline and the front/neck facing encloses the raw edge, giving a clean turn-back. Good for the lined-jacket pathway.
Roll line matters: the upper collar needs slightly more length/ease so the collar can fold over the seam without the under collar showing. Favour the under collar very slightly smaller, and press the roll in before topstitching.
Sleeves: Setting In Without Tucks
A set-in sleeve cap is longer than the armhole it fits into; that extra length is ease, not gathers. The skill is distributing ease so the cap is smooth.
- Run two rows of long ease-stitches in the cap between the notches (just inside and just outside the seam line).
- Pin the sleeve into the armhole right sides together, matching notches, underarm seam, and the shoulder dot.
- Gently draw up the ease threads until the sleeve fits the armhole. Ease is heaviest at the upper cap, almost none at the underarm.
- Press the ease over a ham *before* sewing to shrink it in. Sew with the sleeve side up so you can control fullness; the goal is no tucks, no puckers.
- Front-pitch and notch direction: the single notch is the front, the double notch is the back. Set sleeves the same way on both sides for symmetry.
Cuffs And Plackets
A cuff needs an opening (a placket) so the hand passes through and the cuff buttons snugly.
- Continuous-bound placket: the simplest — a straight strip bound around a slit in the sleeve. Reliable and low-cost; good for a first cuffed shirt.
- Tower (shirt) placket: the tailored version with a pointed overlap that covers the underlap. More steps, sharper result. Attempt it if your continuous-bound sample is clean.
- Pleat or gather the sleeve hem to fit the cuff, keeping the placket at the back of the wrist. Interface the cuff, enclose the raw edges, and topstitch to match the collar.
Front Closures: Plackets That Lie Flat
- A cut-on / folded placket (extension folded back and interfaced) or a separate button band both work; interface the band so it stays crisp and buttonholes are stable.
- Buttonhole spacing: place the top button to control neckline gape and the bust/chest button to prevent the worst gape point; space the rest evenly. A common method: fix the top and bottom buttons, then divide the distance evenly for the middle ones. Buttonholes run vertically on a narrow band, horizontally where strain pulls (e.g., a collar stand).
- Buttonhole length = button diameter + button thickness, plus a hair. Test on an interfaced scrap of your fabric. Mark with chalk and a ruler; symmetry left-to-right is what the eye reads as quality.
- The button side and buttonhole side overlap on the centre-front line — buttons sit on CF, buttonholes start a few millimetres past CF toward the edge.
Facings, Interfacing, And A Simple Lining
For the jacket pathway, the front and neckline facing (interfaced) finishes the opening and supports the buttons. A simple lining can be bagged in or sewn to the facing edge to hide all inside seams; keep it light (thrifted lining, a smooth sheet) and cut it from the same pattern minus the facing area, adding a back pleat for movement. Linings are optional — a clean facing plus enclosed/serged seams is a fully acceptable inside finish.
Shoulder And Armscye Fit
Fit check before sleeves go in. The shoulder seam should sit at the edge of the shoulder (or deliberately dropped, by design). The armscye (armhole) should be deep enough to move but not gape; check that the cross-back lets the arms come forward without straining. Pin-fit the shell, mark changes, and true the pattern before cutting sleeves and finishing.
Professional Inside Finishing
The inside is graded too. Use enclosed seams (flat-felled or French seams on shirting; bound or serged on jacket weight), clean facings that are understitched or topstitched so they don't roll out, and even topstitching at a consistent distance (use a guide or presser-foot edge). Press every seam open or to one side as you go — pressing is half of finishing.
Hands-On Assignment: Structured Top or Light Outerwear Build
Task
Choose one pathway and build it to a professional standard, preceded by a fit check and finished with a quality-control pass:
- Pathway A — Button-up shirt: two-piece collar with stand (or convertible collar), front button placket with correctly spaced buttonholes, set-in sleeves eased with no tucks, and cuffs with a continuous-bound or tower placket. Inside finished with flat-felled or French seams.
- Pathway B — Light lined jacket / overshirt: collar (convertible or with facing), set-in sleeves, front/neck facing and an optional simple lining, with enclosed or bound inside seams. Patch or in-seam pockets optional.
Required process, in order: (1) fabric and interfacing test on scrap; (2) collar sample and a sleeve-cap ease sample; (3) cut on grain with notches/dots transferred; (4) pin-fit the shell and record shoulder/armscye changes; (5) assemble in a documented construction sequence; (6) run the quality-control checklist and fix flagged issues before final press.
Construction sequence (shirt pathway, typical): interface pieces → make collar + stand → build front placket → stay-stitch neckline → join shoulders → attach collar/stand → set in sleeves flat or in the round → sew side + underarm seams (flat-fell) → make cuffs + sleeve plackets → attach cuffs → buttonholes and buttons → hem → final press and QC.

Upcycling a larger thrifted shirt into a fitted shirt or overshirt is encouraged as the lowest-cost pathway and is valued equally with sewing from yardage. Stó:lō caution: do not imitate, copy, or "draw inspiration from" Coast Salish or other First Nations designs, motifs, or regalia for collars, plackets, or surface detail. Use your own original detailing; if you wish to work with cultural design, that requires direct invitation and protocol with knowledge keepers, not borrowing.

- Because the shoulder seam position and armhole depth/cross-back affect how the sleeve hangs; fixing fit while the shell is flat and sleeveless is far easier than after the sleeve is set, and prevents pulling or gaping.
- Likely causes: too much ease not shrunk in, ease bunched in one spot instead of distributed, or sewn with the armhole side up so fullness wasn't controlled. Fix: pick out the cap, re-distribute and steam-shrink the ease over a ham, and re-sew with the sleeve side up.
