Unit Description
Students learn how the fashion studio operates: machine safety, tool care, clean work habits, respectful critique, and the design cycle. They set up a design journal and complete a stitch sampler that proves readiness for independent sewing.
Historic Notes
Clothing production has always depended on specialized tools and skilled hands. Before domestic sewing machines became common in the 1800s, most garment work was hand-sewn. The sewing machine changed home sewing, factory production, repair, and fashion access, but it also raised questions about labour conditions, speed, and mass production that still matter today.
Contemporary Uses
Modern fashion studios use the same core habits students need: clean workspaces, labelled materials, technical samples, safe equipment use, prototypes, feedback, revision, and documentation. Designers, tailors, costume shops, outdoor gear makers, and alteration businesses all rely on orderly process.

Safety
- Tie back hair and secure loose sleeves or cords.
- Keep fingers away from the needle path.
- Turn the handwheel toward you.
- Stop sewing before adjusting fabric near the needle.
- Keep pins out of mouths and off the floor.
- Carry scissors closed and pointed down.
- Use irons on stable surfaces and return them safely. Treat steam and soleplates as burn hazards; rest irons on the heel or stand, never face-down.
- Put broken needles, pins, and blades in the labelled sharps container, never in the regular garbage.
- Treat the serger blade like scissors: keep fingers clear, guide fabric, never reach past the knife.
- Know where the first aid kit, sharps container, and nearest exit are before you start.
- Report broken needles, frayed cords, jams, or injuries immediately.
Cleanliness and Order
Cleanliness is part of craftsmanship. Thread nests, fabric scraps, and tools left out create safety risks and waste time. A professional maker resets the space for the next person.

Hands-On Assignment: Stitch Sampler and Studio Passport
Task
Create a labelled stitch sampler on scrap woven fabric that proves you can control the machine safely and accurately.
Core skills (taught and required in this unit):
- Straight stitch on a drawn line.
- Backstitching to secure start and end.
- Pivoted corners.
- Consistent seam allowance.
- Zigzag stitch.
Preview skills (try if ready; these are taught in depth in Unit 3 and are bonus here, not required): topstitching, a seam finish, a hem sample, a buttonhole or closure sample if machines allow, and a serger sample if available. Treat anything you have not been shown yet as optional experimentation, not a requirement.
Cost
Very low. Use scrap fabric, donated fabric, and school thread.
