2 weeks (about 8-10 studio classes). This is the engine-room unit of Level 2: it feeds directly into Units 5 and 6, where your drafted and trued blocks become real tailored garments.
Builds On (Level 1)
In Level 1 Unit 4 you took respectful body measurements, read pattern symbols, laid out a commercial pattern on grain, diagnosed simple fit issues, and altered or mocked up a garment. You used patterns that someone else drafted.
Level 2 flips that relationship. You stop being only a *user* of patterns and become a *maker* of them. You will draft a block from your own measurements, manipulate that block on paper to create new design lines, and drape fabric on a form to find shapes that are hard to draw flat. Everything from Level 1 (respectful measuring, grainline, notches, seam allowance, mock-ups) is assumed mastered and is now applied with industry-level precision.
Unit Description
Students draft a basic block (sloper) from body or dress-form measurements, learning the underlying logic of ease, darts, and balance rather than copying a printed pattern. They then manipulate that block using flat-pattern methods — pivoting and slashing-and-spreading darts, converting darts into seams, gathers, tucks or pleats, and adding fullness and flare. Students true and walk their seams, add seam allowances, notches and grainlines, and label a pattern to professional standard. They are introduced to grading (sizing up and down) and to digital patternmaking concepts. Finally they drape muslin (low-cost thrifted-sheet substitute) on a dress form, mark it, and transfer the drape back to a clean flat paper pattern. The unit closes with a tested muslin and written fit notes.
This is precise, problem-solving work. Patternmaking rewards patience, sharp pencils, and honest measuring more than it rewards talent.
Historic Notes
- Draping vs. drafting traditions. Couture houses in Paris (Vionnet, Grès) draped fabric directly on the form to discover shapes — Madeleine Vionnet's bias-cut gowns of the 1920s-30s could only be found by draping, not by drawing. Tailoring traditions, by contrast, were built on *drafting*: systems of measured proportional rules passed through apprenticeship and guarded trade manuals.
- The block (sloper). The idea of a master pattern with no design — a body-accurate "block" from which all styles are generated — became the backbone of ready-to-wear once factories needed to repeat a fit reliably across thousands of garments.
- Grading. Size grading as a mathematical system grew with industrial sizing in the 20th century, replacing one-off bespoke fitting with standardised size runs (and, controversially, with vanity sizing and narrow "standard" bodies).
- Stó:lō caution. Many Coast Salish garments — woven wool blankets, cedar-bark clothing, regalia — were not "patterned" in the European flat-pattern sense at all; they were shaped by weaving, wrapping, and protocol-bound technique. Do not flatten these traditions into a "draping unit" example, and never draft or reproduce regalia or protected designs. Study European/industrial patternmaking history here; treat Stó:lō textile knowledge as belonging to the Nation, to be learned only with invitation and credit.
Contemporary Uses
- Ready-to-wear and tech packs: Every mass-produced garment starts from a graded block and a trued, labelled pattern set that travels in a tech pack to a factory.
- Custom and bespoke: Tailors, bridalwear, and adaptive/accessible clothing draft and drape to individual bodies and needs.
- Costume and film: Drapers translate a designer's sketch into a working pattern, often by draping on a duplicate of the actor's form.
- Digital and 3D: CLO3D, Browzwear, Optitex and similar tools let designers draft and drape virtually, simulate fabric drape, and grade instantly — reducing physical sampling and waste.
- Circular design: Zero-waste and made-to-measure patternmaking cut cloth more efficiently and let garments be re-cut or re-fit rather than discarded.

Drafting a Block: The Logic of Ease, Darts, and Balance
A block (sloper) is a flat map of a 3D body with no design — just the body plus the ease needed to wear and move.
- Ease comes in two kinds. *Wearing ease* is the minimum needed to breathe, sit, and lift your arms (a fitted bodice typically adds roughly 5-10 cm to the full bust, ~2.5 cm to the waist). *Design ease* is extra added on purpose for a loose or oversized look. A block usually carries wearing ease only.
- Darts exist because the body is round and cloth is flat. The difference between the bust circumference and the waist circumference has to go *somewhere* — a dart removes that excess so the flat cloth hugs a curved body. Dart *intake* (how much you fold out) equals the amount of curve you must absorb.
- Balance means the front and back hang plumb and level: the grainline runs true vertical, the hem is level to the floor, and the cross-grain sits horizontal at bust and hip. An unbalanced block twists no matter how well you sew it.
Draft on kraft paper or newsprint with a sharp pencil, a metre stick or L-square, and a French curve (a clear plastic lid or hand-cut curve works). Always draft the *half* (one side) on the fold logic, since the body is roughly symmetrical.
Flat Pattern Manipulation: Pivot vs. Slash-and-Spread
The core truth of flat patternmaking: a dart can be moved anywhere around its apex, or split into several smaller darts, without changing the fit — as long as the total intake and the apex stay the same.
- Pivot method: Anchor a pin at the dart apex, close the existing dart, and the new dart opening swings open at the location you want. Trace as it pivots. Fast and clean once you trust it; no cutting.
- Slash-and-spread: Draw the new dart or design line, cut along it to (but not through) the apex, then close the old dart so the new line spreads open. Best for adding *fullness* — you can slash in several places and spread evenly to add gathers or flare.
Either method, same principle: you are relocating curve, not erasing it.
Converting Darts to Seams, Gathers, Tucks, Pleats — and Adding Fullness
- Dart to seam: Move the dart into a style line (e.g. a princess seam or yoke). The dart intake is absorbed into the seam's shaping. This is how princess-seam dresses get their close fit with no visible darts.
- Dart to gathers: Release the dart into a gathered area — the intake becomes soft gathers instead of a sharp fold. Great at a waist, yoke, or shoulder.
- Dart to tucks/pleats: Convert the intake into one or more stitched tucks or folded pleats — structured, repeatable, tailored.
- Adding fullness/flare: Slash and spread *beyond* the original intake to add new volume — a flared skirt hem, a fuller sleeve, a gathered peplum. Spread evenly for even fullness; spread more at the hem than the waist for flare that grows downward.
Truing, Walking, Seam Allowances, Notches, Grainlines, Labelling
This is the professional finish that separates a real pattern from a sketch.
- Truing: Clean up every line so curves are smooth and corners are square. Where a dart crosses a seam, fold the dart closed *as it will be sewn*, then cut the seam edge through the folded paper so the edge is correct once stitched.
- Walking seams: "Walk" two pattern pieces that will be sewn together, edge against edge, pivoting along the seam to confirm they are the *same length* and notches align. Mismatched seams mean puckers or a piece that won't fit.
- Seam allowances: Add a consistent allowance (commonly 1 cm or 1.5 cm; 6 mm at curved/enclosed seams) outside the stitch line. Label which one you used.
- Notches: Mark match points, dart legs, centre lines, and "ease here" points. Notches are how the sewer reassembles your puzzle.
- Grainline: A clear straight arrow showing how the piece aligns to the fabric's lengthwise grain. No grainline = no reliable cut.
- Labelling: Every piece needs: pattern/style name, piece name, "cut 1 / cut 2 / cut on fold," size, seam allowance, grainline, and notches. A stranger should be able to cut and sew it with no questions.
Intro to Grading and Digital Patternmaking
- Grading is sizing a finished pattern up or down by adding or removing small, rule-based amounts at set points (e.g. spreading width across the bust, length through the torso). It keeps *proportion and style* constant while changing *size*. It is not the same as re-drafting for a different body shape.
- Digital patternmaking moves all of this on-screen. Concepts and tools to know: CAD pattern software (e.g. CLO3D and Browzwear for 3D drape simulation; Optitex, Gerber/Lectra in industry), digitising a paper pattern into the computer, automatic grading rules, and plotting/printing full-size patterns. Free/low-cost entry points include Seamly2D (open source) and tiled PDF patterns. You do not need a computer to pass this unit — but you should be able to explain what these tools do and why industry uses them.
Draping on the Form
Draping finds shapes that are hard to draw flat.
- Prep the form: Mark key style lines on the dress form with narrow tape (centre front, centre back, bust, waist, hip) if available.
- Block the muslin: Tear or cut a panel of muslin (thrifted-sheet substitute) larger than the area, and pencil the lengthwise grainline. Press it flat.
- Pin true: Pin centre front to the form on true vertical grain first — this sets balance. Smooth the cloth, letting excess collect where a dart or seam belongs.
- Pin and shape: Pin out darts and seams; keep the cross-grain level at bust/hip.
- Mark: Pencil-mark all seam lines, dart legs, apex, and notches *while it's on the form.*
- Transfer and true: Take the muslin off, lay it flat, true the marked lines into clean smooth pattern lines on paper, walk the seams, and add allowances. The drape becomes a real flat pattern.
Hands-On Assignment: Draft, Manipulate, Drape, True
Task
Produce a small but complete patternmaking portfolio for one body region you choose: a bodice front *or* a skirt front (with the option of a basic sleeve if you draft a bodice).
You must do all four stages:
- Draft a basic block from measurements (your own, a partner's taken respectfully, or the dress form's). Show your ease decisions.
- Manipulate the block on paper to create a new design: at minimum one dart-to-detail conversion (dart to seam, gathers, tucks, or pleats) plus added fullness/flare somewhere (slash-and-spread).
- Drape the matching simple bodice or skirt section on the dress form in muslin substitute, mark it, and transfer it to flat paper.
- True everything into one clean, fully labelled paper pattern (seam allowances, notches, grainlines, labels), then cut and sew a tested muslin and write fit notes.
Document each stage with a photo or scan in your process journal, including the "messy" working drafts — patternmakers are graded on logic, not neatness alone.
